CHAPTER 7

For WHAT?

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)

Dr. Tonya Grandberry was standing in her office reviewing the listing of applicants for a new position. Jordan Rivers was listed as a top contender for the job but had not responded to the email or phone calls. As she continued to peruse the list of applicants, she decided to contact the next person. Suddenly, there was a knock on her door. It was her office assistant, Martez Heel, with a very distinguished-looking gentleman. Martez introduced the gentleman, Dr. Grover Majors, and walked back to his office. Dr. Majors was asked to take a seat. After sharing some pleasantries, Dr. Granberry got straight to the point, “What can I do for you?” Dr. Majors smiled and said that he was looking for a change professionally and had been advised to seek out this new social service company. Looking over her glasses, she asked what kind of position he was interested in at BEE-WELL. Being the man he is, he came prepared and handed his resume to Dr. Granberry. She began to review the content of the resume when suddenly Martez opened the door and asked her to step outside. Dr. Granberry excused herself and stepped to the outer office. After being left alone for about eight minutes, Dr. Majors stood up to take his phone out and that was when he saw Jordan’s name listed with a line through it on a potential employee list. His mind began to wander back to the day he gently kissed her. His thoughts were interrupted by Dr. Granberry reentering the office. She apologized for the length of time that she was away explaining that there was a personnel matter down the hall with one of the social workers that needed her attention. Dr. Majors wanted to explore the reason that Jordan’s name was on the paper. He waited for an opportunity to bring her into the conversation. After a few minutes of sharing his experiences, he inquired about the employee’s needs. This gave him the “in” to add that there was a young woman who had been an intern at his former place of employment who might be interested in a position. Knowing that there was a need for his superstar, especially if he got the job, he described the characteristics of a compassionate and skillful worker which piqued Dr. Granberry’s curiosity and she asked, “Does this person have a job?” Dr. Majors responded with, “I am not sure what Jordan is doing now.” She asked if he was referring to Jordan Rivers. Of course, he was glad to share all that he knew about Jordan and her potential. He went on to express that Jordan’s ability to connect with people on a deeper level and help them to get to the root of their hurt or problem was her strength; especially for domestic violence victims.
